Rebuilding Air India Ltd. may be a decade-long effort as the struggling flag carrier needs to overhaul everything from its fleet to the quality of service, according to the head of Indias largest conglomerate that owns the airline.

Given where it began, Air Indias transformation must be seen as a five- to 10-year journey, considering the years-long supply-chain disruptions in key components, the need to overhaul legacy systems, culture and fleet, and the creation of a large cadre of technical and airline professionals, Natarajan Chandrasekaran , chairman at Tata Sons Pvt. , said in the annual report of the groups parent Monday. Every great airline in history was built over decades, not quarters.
